Get Involved

There are many ways to get involved in the carnival from putting an entry into the carnival procession; helping to marshal at our events; sponsoring or donating items for our fund raising efforts or even joining the committee. We welcome any and all contributions from our local community.

We’re a small group of volunteers trying to do good for our community: raising funds for local good causes, and putting on events such as Carnival Week, Christmas Market - and anything else we can do to bring joy to all within our neighbourhood.

Could you…

  • Take part in the procession?
  • Be a marshal for events?
  • Assist with decorating the Bovey float?
  • Donate raffle prizes?
  • Sponsor an event?

You may be thinking “I want to help, but what does it involve?”

Marshalling

What does being a marshal involve?

During events that require road closures, marshals stand at closures and help to direct any traffic that have missed ‘road closed’ signs towards their destination.
You’ll be stationed in pairs, alongside an experienced marshal and training will be given during a short meeting prior.
We also require marshals for other events, such as The Grand Summer Fete, you can assist in directing members of the public; being a point of contact in case of queries; selling raffle tickets and helping to tidy up after events have finished.

What do I need to be a marshal?

Nothing - apart from having a friendly attitude!
High-visibility jackets are provided, and we try to enlist more than enough marshals to allow for loo breaks/joining in of festivities!
You simply need to wear clothing appropriate for the weather and any other items for you own comfort.

Will I be on my feet for hours?

No. We ask for just a few hours, and you’re welcome to bring a camping chair!
For longer events, we always look to have enough people to allow frequent breaks. The more people who can assist with marshalling, the easier it is for everyone.

I’m not familiar with the area or haven't marshalled before, how do I direct traffic?

Firstly, thank you for getting involved, we really do appreciate it and welcome to Bovey!
If you've not marshalled before or are unfamiliar with the area we will always have an experienced marshal alongside to assist.

Raffle

How do I donate raffle prizes?

Firstly: thank you! We always need prizes for our many raffles and events.
Maybe you’re thinking of a de-clutter? In which case, we’re happy to take unwanted gifts - anything you’d consider a good (or booby) prize!
Please contact us via the website or our facebook page and we'll make the appropriate arrangements.
